Introduction to the Cycladic Islands
- Introduction to Cycladic art
There are numbers small islands between Greece and the island of Crete.
The work found in the Cycladic islands is unique and very different from the work of either Greece or Crete.
These, mostly flat ivory figures were found in graves of these ancient people. We know nothing about the people or the art because it was a pre-literate society.
These flat pieces of ivory are delicately carved showing mostly women, and perhaps because of time these women are unclothed. It is the simplicity of these marble figures that so influenced some of the artists of the modern world.
Although most of the pieces we have our female there are few male figures and a few figures carved in full three dimension that have been found.
